Silver Lining

I'm sick of being sick. Crazy sinus pressure, sore throat, back and chest aches, and the normal sick feelings. I went to the doctor today and was told that I must have some virus and if I'm still sick next week that means it turned into a bacterial infection that will need to be treated with antibiotics. Bleh. At least I'm not puking or having any other digestive-type problems (with the exception of the usual lactose intolerance).

Something good has come of all of this, though. While Chase & I were out at Kroger's getting more Advil Cold & Sinus and things to eat for dinner and such, we found some lactose-free ice cream! It's made with soy milk or something. While it does not really taste like real ice cream, it is close enough and counts for a decent substitute. I got the equivalent of cookies-n-cream. It sure did make my throat feel better.

Fun fact: When you see ice cream ads, on TV or print media, you're not actually seeing ice cream since it melts too quickly under the hot lights. What is used instead is mashed potatoes with food coloring.

Highlight

The biggest highlight of this past week has got to be the Sufjan Stevens concert we went to on Thursday. It was great! It was more than just a concert... it was a show. This guy has set out on a mission to do a historically accurate album for each of the 50 United States. So far he's got his home state of Michigan and now Illinois. He and the "Illinoise Makers" were dressed like old school U of I cheerleaders and did these "cheers" for different cities around the state before some songs. He-larious and extremely entertaining. Luckily, the club we saw him at had no rules against cameras.

Tattoo

Last week a friend told me that I should get a tattoo. She said I seemed the type to have one. Of course, my phobia of needles would prevent me from ever getting one, but this got me pondering... what would I get a tattoo of if I were to get one? Right now, I'm thinking I'd get a super sweet robot tattoo.

Cake, Putt-Putt, and a Hero

Friday Chase had what just might be the coolest birthday cake ever. It looked like this:

Yesterday we were pretty lazy. We enjoyed a meal at Houlihan's because Chase had a free birthday meal. We both ordered our food medium, but it torned out well-done (not as in done well, but as in how it was cooked). We then played some putt-putt at a craptacular course. It was sorta fun. I did get one hole-in-one!

We just got back from the Duquoin State Fair where a friend of a friend got to be a hero. A lady had lost her adopted Chinese 6-year-old daughter, and our friend's friend found her. That lady went from terrified to super joyous. It was crazy. Only one fair worker would help this lady. The cops there wouldn't even help. It was pitiful. It really made me wonder just how many children get snatched from these things.

Well, the child was safe and we could again enjoy our fair-going experience. I had some mediocre $5 lemonade and a delicious cinnamon roll and then some funnel cake before heading home.

Does Anyone Else See the Problem Here?

I was watching the Today Show this morning as I do most mornings, and they were covering the hurricane story, of course. They were showing footage of demolished neighborhoods and talking about how there’s not electricity or water and the usual natural disaster effects. Then there was a segment of people who had family that decided not to leave. One lady said that her sister had said that she lived through hurricane Camille, so she’d get through this one, too (yeah, so if I’ve gotten shot in the chest before and someone says they’re going to shoot me in the chest again, I should be able to survive that just fine, too… but that’s not the issue at hand). So, these sons, daughters, brothers and sisters of the hurricane victims are going on TV saying that they haven’t heard from their parents and/or siblings since before the hurricane. These people are going on TV asking their parents and/or siblings to call and let them know that they are okay.

Does anyone else see the problem here? This same show, just one segment earlier, had just said that there was no electricity in that area. How would these people get the message over the television?
